Small Generators of Cocompact Arithmetic Fuchsian Groups

In the study of Fuchsian groups, it is a nontrivial problem to determine a set of generators. Using a dynamical approach we construct for any cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian group a fundamental region in SL2(R) from which we determine a set of small generators.

The Gromov-lawson-rosenberg Conjecture for Cocompact Fuchsian Groups

We prove the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture for cocompact Fuchsian groups, thereby giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed spin manifold of dimension greater than four with fundamental group cocompact Fuchsian to admit a metric of positive scalar curvature. Given a smooth closed manifold M, it is a long-standing question to determine whether or notM admits a Riemannian metri...

Flat Lorentz 3-manifolds and cocompact Fuchsian groups

Mess deduces this result as part of a general theory of domains of dependence in constant curvature Lorentzian 3-manifolds. We give an alternate proof, using an invariant introduced by Margulis [18, 19] and Teichmüller theory. We thank Scott Wolpert for helpful conversations concerning Teichmüller theory. We also wish to thank Paul Igodt and the Algebra Research Group at the Katholieke Universi...

Poincaré’s Theorem for Fuchsian Groups

We present a proof of Poincaré’s Theorem on the existence of a Fuchsian group for any signature (g; m1, ..., mr), where g, m1, ..., mr provide an admissable solution to the formula describing the hyperbolic area of the group’s quotient space. Along the way we elucidate relevant concepts in hyperbolic geometry and the theory of Fuchsian groups.

Fuchsian Groups: Intro

In various ways, mathematicians associate extra structure with sets and then investigate these objects. For example, by adding a binary operation to a set and validating that the set with the binary operation fulfills certain axioms, we arrive at a group. Similarly, given a set, one can specify a collection of subsets fulfilling some criteria that gives a topology, a sense of which points are c...
